About

The Hagia Sophia Mosque is an impressive structure located in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul, which has served many different functions throughout its history. Built in 537, this unique architectural masterpiece is considered one of the most important structures of the Byzantine period. Originally constructed as a church, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque when the Ottoman Empire conquered it in 1453. This process left deep marks on both the architectural and cultural identity of the structure.

The architecture of Hagia Sophia was realized using the most advanced engineering knowledge of the time. The main dome, 31 meters high, is surrounded by large windows that illuminate the interior of the building, creating an incredible play of light inside. Additionally, the mosaics in its decorations house some of the finest examples of both Christian and Islamic art. This structure, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hosts millions of local and foreign tourists every year.

There are some points that visitors should know before exploring Hagia Sophia. Firstly, taking photos inside the building is allowed, but the use of flash is prohibited. Additionally, visiting hours vary according to the season, so it would be beneficial to check the current hours before going. It is also recommended to join guided tours to better understand the historical and cultural significance of Hagia Sophia.
